Plant Dyed Swatches

Plant Dyed Swatches

from $4.00

Swatchbooks are now available demonstrating the recipes found in our Core Colors Catalog. Swatchbooks include at least 30 swatches of different recipes made with natural dyes. You can purchase our full collection or order individual swatches for $4 each. The complete swatchbook includes a key card identifying the name of each swatch and its corresponding recipe.

Green Matters Core Colors Catalog (CCC) includes our most popular botanical dye recipes featured in our Dye Lot of the Month (DLOM) service. We created the Core Colors Catalogue to help small and large businesses use natural dyes without the roadblock of minimums or extensive development. Wholesale CCC partners have access to any of the dye recipes we used for past DLOM colors provided they meet the MOQ. We offer a sampling service for these recipes. Each month, we add any new colors featured in our Dyelot of the Month service, to become permeant offerings for our whole clients.

The  Minimum order quantity for Core Colors is 5lb of fiber.

The fabric shown is a linen/cotton blend. Any recipe in this swatchbook can be sampled on your fabric/garment.

Please note that without sampling, we are unable to determine the exact color outcome of these recipes on your fabrics, as the processing history of a fabric influences its interaction with plant dyes. As all fabrics (even two cottons) accept the same dye recipe differently, and this swatch is not meant to replace a sample.

Please note that if you purchase the full swatchbook, and return it to us in the same condition as it was sent to you, the price of the swatchbook will be deducted from the invoice of your first order.

What to Expect and How to Care For Naturally Dyed Garments

While we use the same recipe for all garments dyed the color of the month, we can not guarantee an exact shade match to images used to advertise this service. All fibers accept dyes differently, and even two pieces of cotton from different mills may exhibit slightly different shades. Textiles with existing colors and patterns can be dyed, but are likely to appear a different shade than our product image. We value the organic nature of working with plant dyes and we hope you do to.

Natural dye only bonds to natural fibers (cotton, hemp, linen, wool, silk, etc), and not synthetic fibers (polyester, acetate, etc). Note that if your garment is constructed with a synthetic thread in the seams, the thread may not change color with the fabric. The dye has potential to change the finish of any hardware on your garment, including buttons, zippers, etc.

Please be aware that over dyeing garments that have been wore previously may exhibit previously unseen stains after dyeing. An example is a tee shirt we found at a Goodwill, after being mordanted and dyed, had darker markings under the armpits, where aluminum based deodorant permeated the fiber. If any previously unseen stains present themselves, you have the option to opt for a two tone reprocessing to cover the stain. Also note that plant based dye does not create a perfectly even color, and tonal variations my be present in the fiber.

Please note that existing holes, tears, abrasion or other damage may be exacerbated by the agitation of our dye machines. Garments or textiles that do not have holes, but are fragile may develop holes in this process.

Do you have a wedding dress, or some other precious garment? Learn more about our Bridal Heirloom Page here.

Depending on how your item was cared for prior to dyeing, it is possible it could shrink slightly in the dye process. If your items have been previously washed warm or were sold as ‘pre-shrunk’ then you likely don’t have to worry!

Natural dyes should be cared for mindfully. Your naturally dyed item will keep color longest with the following:

  • Wash cold on delicate (alone on the first wash)

  • Use a gentle detergent (avoid Tide Original, oxiclean or bleach)

  • Store out of light

  • avoid acids

We do not offer refunds for any of our services. If you purchase and change your mind of about which color you want, you are able to transfer your order to a different color or future dye lot.

We do insure our packages, though we are only able to insure the packages we ship for the amount paid for the dye service. We are not responsible for lost shipments, though our team will help to recover any insurance money for a lost package.
